Annotations for The Ghost of You

Lyric: I never said I’d lie in wait forever
Annotation:

Lyric: At the top of my lungs in my arms, she dies, she dies
Annotation:
The dead lover spent her final moments cradled in her lover’s arms. The remaining lover felt helpless as he watched her life slip away and he couldn’t do anything to save her. When she died, he screamed to the heavens in anguish, aware that his life would never be the same again. The remaining lover was left with nothing but a grief-stricken heart and the memory of his lover being taken away too soon. This heavy grief set him up to make the fateful deal with the devil that set off the album’s events.

Lyric: Ever get the feeling that you’re never all alone?
Annotation:
This line is the singer feeling a presence other than himself, a shadow, a ghost, maybe not necessarily the ghost of his love, but maybe the thought, regret, sadness, or remorse for his love dying. Hence the song title, The Ghost of You.

Lyric: For all the ghosts that are never gonna catch me
Annotation:
This is regarding his past. It’s for all the people he left behind, and all the debts he owed to his past and present. Yet here despite acknowledging them he looks ahead and puts it plainly. They haunt him no longer. It could also be said that the ghosts of his past did not haunt him anymore, as he is considering suicide.

Lyric: And I remember now
Annotation:
It’s often said that people have revelations upon the edge of death. The singer here is portraying the character having one, remembering what has come before as he gazes on what lies ahead.

Lyric: And all the wounds that are ever gonna scar me
Annotation:
In the event of the death of a close one, it’s certainly possible for it to leave a scar, much like how a physical injury would, although mentally. This line possibly indicates how only more pain is to come, whether physical or mental and possibly both, furthering his reasoning in ending his life. This may also be a reference to lead singer Gerard Way’s self-hate, as mentioned in an interview with Kerrang!: “Self-hate is always a big part of the lyrics.” Way also mentioned that “Helena”, another song off the album, was like “a really angry open letter to himself.” According to him, the song was about why he wasn’t around for a woman, his grandmother, for the last year of her life. This self-hate may have fictionally caused Way to commit self-harm, hence the wounds and the scars.

Lyric: For all the ghosts that are never gonna...
Annotation:
PROPOSED SUGGESTION: It could be that this is where the narrator dies as the phrase isn’t finished

Lyric: I can’t always just forget her
 But she could try
Annotation:
After the death of someone, especially someone close, it’s easy to be reminded of that fact everywhere you go. Scientifically, this is called bereavement, or traumatic death. One of the most common effects of bereavement is to experience nightmares and flashbacks about the death and even moments surrounding the death. Assuming that the girl is in a better place (heaven), the speaker ponders if his lost lover is able to move on, and if it will be easier for her to move on or for him to move on.

Lyric: Could I? Should I?
Annotation:
Here the narrator is contemplating suicide, as the person they are talking about is ‘never coming home’, suggesting their death. Because his loved one is dead, he wants to kill himself to be with them. At the same time, the narrator is not sure whether his beloved wants him to be with her, and therefore is questioning. In the music video, this person is shown to be Mikey Way, dying during a beach invasion reminiscent of D-Day.

Lyric: If I died, we’d be together, now
Annotation:
In an ideal afterlife, everything is as you desire. If he were to die and go to heaven, for example, there may be a version of her there for him, or something like that. This also relates to the storyline of the whole album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, which follows the story of a man who makes a deal with the devil to be reunited with his lover, because he misses her.

Lyric: If I fall
 If I fall down
 Woah, woah, woah, woah
 Woah, woah, woah, woah
Annotation:
The narrator is wondering if he will see his lover if he dies. “Falling down” is discussed in numerous MCR songs, including “Desert Song” and “I Never Told You What I Do For A Living.”

Lyric: And all the things that you never ever told me
And all the smiles that are ever, ever
Annotation:
Knowing that once someone dies they cannot tell anymore about themselves is heartbreaking. Not to mention, their smiles will never be seen outside of photographs ever again. The speaker trails on in the last line because he is… 1) Caught up in thoughts about all that he will never get to know/see/experience again with the person who died 2) Making a transition into the second verse that starts with “Ever…”

Lyric: At the end of the world or the last thing I see
Annotation:
These lines refer to the death of a loved one. From a dying man’s perspective, the last thing that he sees will be his version of the end of the world. In the context of the music video, “never coming home” would refer to soldiers dying overseas and never getting to return to their families. The music video depcicts soldiers attacking a beach in a D-Day type landing. Both Gerard and Mikey Way are soldiers, and Mikey dies at the end of the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCUpvTMis-Y
